My oldest daughter is soon getting baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and I wanted to create her some artwork to celebrate this momentous milestone. So much of religious Christian artwork can feel formal and stuffy. I wanted something modern and whimsical. Something that would speak to the sensibilities of an 8-year-old little girl who loves all things rainbow, glitter and joy!

To me, one of the most exciting things about seeing a child get baptized, is knowing they are dedicating themselves toward trying to be a better person. In our home, we talk a lot about empathy, inclusion and kindness. I truly believe Jesus Christ set the ultimate example in this regard, and would be the first one out advocating for the marginalized, including children, women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQIA+ community. I am so humbled to witness my daughter grow and learn how to love all people — just as Jesus did! So often, she is the one teaching me about what it means to love others and follow Jesus. And for that, I’m grateful!

I wanted my artwork to reflect the joy, peace and wonder of a life filled with true Christ-like empathy, tenderness and advocacy for others. We are truly all better off when we lift each other.

What I came up with was a white — but colorful — watercolor dove with delicate pen work, holding an olive branch. Above the dove, is a pastel rainbow. When I showed my daughter, she gasped in delight! I’ll count that as a win!

I’ll be displaying this sweet little dove as a decoration during my daughter’s baptism. But I’m thrilled to be offering prints and stickers in my shop, too!
